Green light for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR): The European Parliament has given its tacit approval. The next step towards final adoption of the new Regulation is an endorsement by the Council, representing the member states' governments.

The PPWR will then be published in the Official Journal of the EU and is expected to enter into force at the beginning of 2025. Its application will then begin to apply after a transition period of 18 months. However, the Regulation also contains a number of provisions with differing transition periods, and these will only become binding later.

The PPWR is being adopted via the corrigendum procedure. The compromise negotiated in "trilogue" talks by the Parliament's and the Council's representatives in the first quarter of this year could only be submitted in English language to the EU Parliament's plenary vote in April due to a lack of time before the European elections. The versions in the other official EU languages have now been adopted as corrections to this text.

As port of this procedure, the Environment Committee confirmed the PPWR on Monday evening. At the opening of the plenary session on Tuesday morning, the corrigendum was then announced by the EU Parliament's vice-president Katarina Barley. In accordance with Parliament's rules of procedure, the PPWR has now been adopted because no political group or group of at least one twentieth of the 720 MEPs demanded a vote within 24 hours of the announcement.
